Underground Cabling System for Iloilo City to Start in 2023 – Mayor Jerry Treñas

Iloilo City, Philippines – Mayor Jerry Treñas announced that the implementation of an underground cabling system for telecommunication and electric power lines will begin this year. In a statement, Treñas said that power distributor More Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power), telecommunications companies, and cable TV providers have agreed to transfer their overhead wires underground.

This move aims to eradicate the unsightly “spaghetti” or tangled wires that have long been a problem in the city. According to Treñas, “The wires along Calle Real [Heritage Zone in City Proper] and the plazas will be placed underground by MORE Power starting this year.”

Last year, the Public Utilities Group of Iloilo (PUGI), a group of utility providers servicing the city, reached an initial agreement to split the total cost of P150 million for the underground wiring, with MORE Power shouldering P96 million and the telcos paying for P54 million.

This project is expected to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city and improve the overall quality of life for its residents. It also aims to provide a more reliable and efficient telecommunications and power supply to the city.
