Traffic Jam on Pavia Flyover Causes Commuters to Turn it into Pedestrian Overpass

Pavia, Iloilo – A recent traffic jam on the P680-million Ungka Flyover in Pavia, Iloilo on Monday morning, February 6th, has caused hundreds of commuters to turn the flyover into a pedestrian overpass. Commuters have expressed their frustrations on social media, with some comparing the situation to the Dinagyang Festival, where people also had to walk long distances due to road closures.

The cause of the congestion on the flyover is due to ongoing civil works by the Department of Public Works and Highways for road widening. Construction on the flyover began in January 2020 and it passes over the busy intersection of Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue (Diversion Road) and President Corazon C. Aquino Avenue (Circumferential Road 1).

The aim of the P680-million flyover is to decongest traffic in the area and shorten the travel time from Iloilo City to the Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo, to just 20 minutes. However, the recent traffic situation has shown that there is still much work to be done to reach this goal.

Despite the inconvenience, the local government and the Department of Public Works and Highways have assured the public that they are working on completing the construction of the flyover as soon as possible. The public is encouraged to be patient and to consider alternative routes during this time.
