Description
Taltal is an important Lenten event celebrated by the people of Barotac Viejo in the province of Iloilo, Philippines. The event centers around the story of Christ’s Passion, beginning with his arrest, trial, suffering, and ultimately, his execution by crucifixion. The Passion is performed as a play, set to music and drama, and is a form of art that has been used as a subject for painting.
The Taltal production has been performed annually since 1975, and it is a long-standing tradition in Barotac Viejo. No professional actors are hired for the play, and it is performed only by those who were born in Barotac Viejo. The play’s cast is drawn from all walks of life within the municipality, and almost a hundred people participate in the production.
The staging of Taltal is a way for the people of Barotac Viejo to deepen their self-awareness as Catholics and to express their faith through art. The play is performed in Hiligaynon, and it is open to everyone to see.
