The West Visayas State University Medical Center, also known as Don Benito Hospital, is a 300-bed tertiary teaching and training hospital. It serves as a functional laboratory for the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences Institute of the West Visayas State University (WVSU). Although it is a unit of WVSU and operates under its charter, it follows the policies and procedures of the Department of Health and the Philippine General Hospital.
The hospital’s origins trace back to 1982 when former Vice President Fernando Lopez offered the Benito Lopez Memorial Hospital for sale. Due to insufficient funds, the agreement became a lease, with the hospital serving as the base hospital of the School of Medicine from 1986.
In April 1987, the hospital was finally purchased through a GSIS loan and was renamed the West Visayas State University Hospital. It was authorized by the Department of Health to operate as a 150-bed tertiary training hospital, with the College of Medicine overseeing its daily operations.
By 1991, Residency Training programs in major clinical departments were accredited. The hospital eventually gained approval to become a Medical Center, envisioned as the “PGH of the South,” and by 2000, it consistently exceeded its 150-bed capacity.
The hospital underwent various expansions and renovations over the years, increasing its bed capacity for both paying and charity patients. In July 2001, a request was made to increase the bed capacity from 150 to 300 beds, with the aim of enhancing the quality of training for students and resident physicians, nurses, and other paramedical groups, as well as improving service to patients.
This request was approved by the Department of Health Bureau of Health Facilities and Services and the Board of Regents. By November 2001, the hospital was officially renamed the West Visayas State University Medical Center and recognized as a 300-bed facility.
